Cryptococcus neoformans is one of our focuses at HIFAS Biologics: an encapsulated fungus that causes cryptococcosis, a serious disease with high mortality rates, especially among HIV-infected patients. The problem lies in the fact that, in recent years, this pathogen has developed a worrying resistance to traditional antimicrobial treatments, which increases the need for new therapeutic options and makes it more urgent than ever.
Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungus commonly found in the environment, especially in soil contaminated with poultry droppings. This pathogen can cause lung infections and, in more severe cases, spread to other parts of the body, such as the central nervous system and bloodstream. Cryptococcosis is particularly dangerous for immunocompromised people, such as those living with HIV, as they can experience serious complications that can lead to death.
CRYPTOCOCCUS, A LATENT THREAT
Approximately 220,000 cases of cryptococcal meningitis are reported each year worldwide, resulting in about 181,000 related deaths. These numbers are alarming and underscore the urgent need to develop effective treatments to combat this fungus. But at HIFAS Biologics, we are dedicated to changing this situation by researching and developing new therapeutic options.
Currently, we have already developed several active samples with potential against Cryptococcus neoformans. These samples are part of our ongoing research in the field of fungal-based antifungals and each has been selected after a rigorous research process to evaluate their efficacy and safety in the treatment of infections caused by Cryptococcus neoformans.
The use of fungi in the development of new antibiotics is not only based on their potential to fight infections, but also on their ability to offer treatments that are sustainable and less prone to generate microbial resistance. As bacteria become resistant to traditional antibiotics, it is essential to explore alternatives, and fungi represent a rich source of bioactive compounds that can be harnessed in medicine.
