Six decades without new drugs to combat bacterial resistance

Bacteria are developing increasing resistance to drugs, and the lack of innovation in antimicrobial medications has been evident for decades. Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant threat to public health worldwide. Most of the antibiotics currently available on the market are merely enhanced versions of broad-spectrum products introduced in 1962. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that research in this field is “stagnant.”
